about

"So I travelled, stopping ever and again, in great strides of a thousand years or more, drawn on by the mystery of the earth's fate, watching with a strange fascination the sun grow larger and duller in the westward sky, and the life of the old earth ebb away."
-H. G. Wells, The Time Machine

The Old Earth follows the artist's continued interest in gradual textural and harmonic changes, quietness and detail. These are explored by way of techniques such as granular synthesis and signal morphing. Virtual instruments and diverse unrelated recordings (scuttling cockroaches, church bells, melting ice plates, YouTube videos, electromagnetic signals, choirs...) interact via computer and modular synth in new, generally restrained contexts. Themes of inspiration included animal rights, the ethics of autoplay, outdoors listening and H.G. Wells' The Time Machine.

-------------------------------------------------

Net is Edward Trethowan, an English musician interested in textural adventures and the manipulation and re-contextualisation of sonic materials. Often inspired by soundscapes of wildlife and weather, such the wind over water or through trees, his work usually emphasises quietness, detail, continuous change and chance events. He lives in Tampere, Finland.
